The LinkedIn Profile Checklist Recruiters Actually Use
Recruiters find candidates by running keyword searches inside LinkedIn Recruiter, then skim the results in seconds. Your profile is a search result before it is a biography, and most profiles fail at the search stage rather than the reading stage.
Headline: role, specialism, value
The default headline is your current job title at your current employer, which wastes the single most searchable line on your profile. Write a headline that names the role you want, your specialism, and what you deliver.
Example: 'Operations Manager | Supply Chain & Logistics | Cut fulfilment costs across 4 sites'.
About: first three lines do the work
LinkedIn truncates your About section after roughly three lines. Lead with who you are, what you specialise in, and one concrete result. Save the career history for the paragraphs below the fold.
Experience: mirror your resume, not your job description
Each role should carry three to five achievement bullets with numbers, written in the same language as the jobs you are targeting. Copying an internal job description in is the fastest way to look interchangeable.
The quick wins most people skip
These take under an hour combined and materially change how often you appear in searches.
- Set your location to the market where you want to work
- Turn on Open to Work (recruiters-only if you are employed)
- Fill all 50 skill slots with terms from real job postings
- Use a clear, current, professional photo and a simple banner
- Claim a custom profile URL
The takeaway
Treat your profile as a search result. Get the headline, About opening, and skills right, and you will show up in far more recruiter searches without applying to anything.
