Changing Careers Without Starting Over at the Bottom
Experienced professionals changing fields rarely need to restart. What they need is a translation layer: the same work, described in the vocabulary of the industry they are moving into, aimed at roles that genuinely overlap with what they already do.
Start with adjacent roles, not dream roles
The easiest move keeps one thing constant. Change the industry but keep the function, or change the function but keep the industry. Changing both at once is possible but it takes longer and usually costs more in salary.
Translate, do not delete
Rewrite your bullets around the transferable core: budgets managed, people led, processes improved, customers retained, risk reduced. Strip out the internal jargon and tool names that only make sense inside your old sector.
Close the credibility gap deliberately
Pick the one or two credentials or tools that appear in almost every posting you want and get them. A single relevant certification plus a project you can talk about beats a long list of half-finished courses.
Expect a longer search and plan for it
Career changers get filtered out more often at the screening stage, so volume and targeting both matter. Applying to fewer roles with a properly positioned resume beats sending the same document to two hundred postings.
The takeaway
Pick adjacent roles, translate your experience into their language, close one credibility gap, and apply with intent rather than volume.
